How I Became a Counselor

I decided to become a counselor after spending the summer with women who had aged out of Russian orphanages. They told me their life story and how they are doing. The organization that allowed us to meet, provided them with everything except mental health care and I decided I would go to college to learn how to help emotionally. Going into the summer I had a heart for traumatized females due to my own personal experiences, but following that summer, my passion was ignited.

I completed my undergraduate degree in psychology. During this time, I did my internships at children’s advocacy centers working with children and their families going through abuse investigations.

I completed my masters degree at UTSA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I have since worked in non profits, group private practice, and a psychiatric hospital.

Types of Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a classic talk therapy technique that helps increase awareness of negative thinking in order to better handle challenging situations. In addition to helping those with mental health disorders (such as anxiety or depression), CBT is also helpful for anyone who is looking to learn how to manage stressful situations. Therapists that use CBT often have a structured program, which involves a set number of sessions. CBT is frequently paired with other treatments, such as medication, when necessary. Think this approach may be right for you?

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of talk therapy (psychotherapy). It’s based on CBT, but it’s specially adapted for people who experience emotions very intensely.

Solution Focused

Solution-focused therapy is a goal-directed collaborative approach to psychotherapeutic change that is conducted through direct observation of clients' responses to a series of precisely constructed questions.

EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.
